Spanish or Castillian

Spanish or Castillian is an Indo-European Romance language that originated in northern Spain. With the growth of the Spanish Empire during the 15th and 19th centuries, the language spread to Africa, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific.

The Real Academia Española is the institution responsible for preserving the Spanish language and keeping the formal language up-to-date.

Depending on the source, Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world. There are twenty-one countries where Spanish is the official language and approximately 322 and 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language.
